How to Verify your Website on Google

There are two methods to verify a website:

A. Recommended Method - Upload an HTML to your website. Here are the steps:

1. Download the HTML verification file.
2. Upload the file to your root directory.
3. Confirm successful upload by visiting the URL in your browser. Such as:
http://www.yourdomain.com/provided-html-from-google.html
4. Click the "Verify" button.

To stay verified, don't remove the HTML file, even after verification succeeds.

If you have access to the FTP, I would recommend doing this.

B. Alternate Method - Choose one of the options below then click the "Verify" button.

a. HTML Tag - Add a meta tag to your site's homepage. Copy the meta tag provided and paste it into your site's homepage. It should go in the <head> section, before the first <body> section. To stay verified, don't remove the meta tag, even after verification succeeds.

b. Domain name provider - Sign in to your domain name provider.

c. Google Analytics - Use your Google Analytics account. You must be using the "asynchronous tracking code." Your tracking code should be in the <head> section of  your page. You must have the "edit" permission for the Analytics web property. Note that the Google Analytics tracking code is used only to verify the site ownership. No Google Analytics data will be accessed.

If you are managing the Google Analytics or you are the sole owner of this account, I would recommend doing this.

d. Google Tag Manager - Use your Google Tag Manager account. You must be using the "container snippet." You must have the "manage" permission for the Tag Manager container. Note that the Google Tag Manager container ID is used only to verify site ownership. No Google Tag Manager data will be accessed.
